Agus Triyanto BR, widely known as Agus TBR, was born in Pacitan, East Java, on August 3, 1979. He pursued his passion for art by studying at the Faculty of Fine Art at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (Institut Seni Indonesia) Yogyakarta, graduating in 2006. His career gained early momentum in 2008 when he won the prestigious Akili Museum Art Award, earning him a scholarship to study for a year at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing, China.
Since 2001, Agus has participated in numerous group exhibitions both in Indonesia and internationally. His works are distinguished by a realistic style infused with surrealistic and symbolic elements, exploring the complexities of modern urban life, environmental issues, and societal tensions. Often, his paintings reflect the emotional and physical strains of city living, depicted through distorted human forms, evoking themes of violence, alienation, and the harshness of urban existence. His use of the human body as a central motif conveys his empathy towards the struggles faced by individuals in society.
Agus’s paintings, often characterized by intense facial expressions and emotional depth, have been showcased in prominent exhibitions, including his solo shows "Homesick Alien" (2012) at Emmitan CA Gallery in Surabaya and "(Ber) Kisah Tubuh" (2016) at Semarang Gallery. Internationally, his work has been displayed at events like the Shanghai Art Fair and the Biennale Jogja IX: Neo Nation (2007). Over the years, Agus TBR has garnered numerous accolades, including Best Work by Pratisara Affandi Adikarya Yogyakarta in 2003, and he has been a finalist in the Jakarta Art Awards. His evocative and thought-provoking style has solidified his place in the Indonesian contemporary art scene, with his works appearing in prestigious auctions such as Christie's and Sotheby's, achieving significant recognition and value. Through his art, Agus continues to challenge viewers to reflect on the socio-political dynamics of contemporary life, making him a notable figure in modern Indonesian art.
