Harmony between humanity and nature has long been a lasting ideal in Chinese culture. From ancient poems celebrating the first sprouting of plants in spring to today’s growing awareness of environmental care, people across centuries have continued to imagine a world in which humans and nature coexist in balance. Spring Light is Chinese contemporary sculptor Cai Zhisong’s renewed Eastern interpretation of this enduring vision. Bringing together three major series of work: “Homeland”, “Rose”, and “Reflection”, the exhibition traces a passage from the external world of nature to an inner spiritual homeland, from physical surroundings to a place of emotional and mental dwelling.
Early in 2016, Cai Zhisong began exploring the idea of “homeland” as the foundation of human existence, weaving together themes of beauty and harmony. In the “Homeland” series, traditional motifs such as lotus, landscapes, and butterflies form miniature worlds of nature, where personal sensation and the natural environment quietly parallel each other. These works carry a sense of calm and refinement reminiscent of the cultural spirit at its height during China’s Northern Song dynasty. The “Rose” series symbolizes universal love and the purest form of beauty. Transformed into a recurring sculptural motif, the rose stands between blooming and withering, color and weight, resisting the passage of time and revealing another dimension of homeland: one shaped by warmth, intimacy, and emotional connection.
Regardless of how form and material evolve, Cai Zhisong’s practice has consistently focused on the integration of Eastern aesthetics with contemporary sculptural language, without blindly pursuing novelty under Western influence. His material explorations offer viewers diverse visual experiences: the dynamism and sheen of stainless steel bring butterflies to life, while the combination of metal and color allows roses to bloom beyond the limits of time. Through the careful balance of detail, texture, and craftsmanship, these works transcend literal representations of nature and instead become reflections of inner states, seeking a sense of consonance between humanity and nature.
After years of sustained exploration, Cai’s most recent “Reflection” series marks a new shift toward aesthetic and spiritual introspection. Using luminous yet transparent crystal as his medium, he carves highly distilled geometric forms. As the artist suggests, it is precisely this purity that allows for infinite reflection. The unique physical qualities of crystal create a moment of self-encounter, where colorless surfaces refract inner emotions and personal states of mind.
What begins as a longing for the natural homeland ultimately returns to a more secluded spiritual refuge. Set within the heart of the modern city, Spring Light allows the form and spirit of art to quietly nourish everyday life, inviting audiences to rediscover the enduring beauty of classical Eastern ideology.
