Shang Yang
Shang Yang, born in 1942, is a well-known Chinese painter who often incorporates traditional Chinese landscape imagery into his work. Educated in Soviet realism at the Hubei Institute of Fine Arts, he first gained recognition with his painting *Boatmen on the Yellow River*, which was praised by the art establishment.
Shang Yang's art focuses on the relationship between humans and the environment. He uses large landscapes to express concerns about how modern society is disconnecting from nature. He believes that true nature is being replaced by artificial versions, which he sees as a threat to humanity's future. Over the years, he has experimented with different materials, especially since 2000. His most recent works, particularly from 2016, are his most abstract, continuing a style he developed in his 2013 exhibition at the Suzhou Museum of Art.
