Fu Shuai

Fu Shuai is a Tianjin-based artist who was born in 1985 in Taiyuan Shanxi Province, China. Fu Shuai graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art and Master of Fine Art from the Free Painting Department of the Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts in 2008 and 2011 respectively. Using the technique of Chinese stone rubbing, Fu Shuai creates outstanding works which allow the viewers to step into the optical trap he constructed. Additionally, his technique brings unique perceptions of dimensionality and reality. Started his experience in the lens of digital technology, Fu Shuai began to challenge himself by examining the relationship between real spaces and virtual spaces. The idea of it came when he was playing a game, and a bug distorted the virtual space. As he felt disconnected from reality, he decided to create works that are products of the realisation of his examination.

“I envision my work to be a trap, luring its viewers into an unfamiliar space, losing themselves within it. Just like a magic trick, its intention is for the audience to the fall for the ruse.” Fu Shuai seems to have drawn some connections between the verge of virtual and reality to his paintings. He believes that the use of materials that are implemented to his paintings is essential as it would lead the audience into the form of realistic experience in unidentifiable subjects.

Fu Shuai has held several solo exhibitions since 2012, in Tianjin, Beijing and Durlach (Karlsruhe, Germany). His works were also widely featured in numerous group exhibitions since 2010 in Germany and Austria, as well as in the cities of Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Chengdu in China.
