Awiki works with a purity of purpose and a mastery of technique that set his art beyond the constraints of time or place. Engaged in a direct impressionistic encounter with the dynamics of light, Awiki approaches his work with great physical courage, often enduring the ferocity of the tropical sun in order to complete a painting. It is amazing to watch Awiki paint, with a brush hardened to function like a palette-knife, he works very fast with great conviction. He delights in producing self-portraits, having two of his best portrrait in his collection. Awiki paints directly from life, travelling with his materials to the site. When he still traveled by motorbike, this restricted him to small canvasses: but once he acquired a pick-up truck, he was able produce much larger works, heavy with thick paint.
