Chng Huck Theng came from a privileged family, thus his journey into the art world was not as ‘smooth’. Many artists saw him as a boy from a well off family that needed to satisfy his ego by dabbling into art.

He proved his serious intent by joining the Penang Art Society and later he was invited to exhibit in the International Chung Ling Artists Invitation Show. This show was an important stepping-stone for Chng in his art journey. Two years later in 2004, he co-founded ArtGrup Penang with prominent Malaysian artists Yeong Seak Ling, Dr. Yuen Chi Ling, Dato Tang Hon Yin and Dr. Zakaria Ali. ArtGrup Penang was then the most aggressive and dynamic art group in Malaysia that had produced 3 impressive coffee table art books, held 6 local and international art shows within 3 years.

In 2007, the National Art Gallery (NAG) Malaysia bought and collected his work ‘The Good Old Days’. By the end of the year, ABN AMRO bank sponsored Chng’s very first art book and had a solo exhibition in ArtSeni, Kuala Lumpur, followed by Galeri Seni Mutiara in Penang. His art book was launched by former Director General of NAG and Chairman of the Art Acquisition Board Puan Wairah Mazuki. The art book entitled ‘Chng Huck Theng – The Journey’ was written by two prominent art curators being NAG Research and Development Director, Puan Zanita Anuar, and Director of Museum & Galeri Tuanku Faziah, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Hasnul Saidon. It was complimented with a forward by one of Malaysia’s famous art collector Dato’ Dr. Tan Chee Khuan.
