About the Artist
Born and raised in Bandung, the capital of the Sundanese culture of west Java, Tisna studied graphic art at the Bandung Institute of Technology and in Germany.
Tisna Sanjaya is a multi-disciplinary artist. His often controversial artistic yearnings resulted in numerous mix media works on canvas, performance art as well as installation pieces that have drawn mixed responses from both the public and art critics. Influences from his experience as an artistic director for theatre productions can be seen on his paintings where there is a heightened degree of drama, almost like theatrical scenes. Prevalent themes in his thought provoking creations include problems of humanity, social concerns as well as politics.
He now teaches at the Bandung Institute of Technology, which makes him a civil servant and government employee, a status that he often uses as a satiric, ironical tool in his performance and installation works.
